Intervention on existing building

The house is a holiday home with a history of over a hundred years. The home initially had a symmetrical shape on two perpendicular axes, visible in the plan and facade. The building was altered over time. The symmetry was first broken with volumes attached to the building. Then, gaps appeared inside in the arched walls. These are not related to the braced arches on the facade specific to the Dobrogea area, which are found on one of the axes of symmetry. Next to the house, a new volume appeared, made of masonry, a summer house, with rooms that open directly into the courtyard, suitable for summer rental. The clients who bought the property understood the architectural value of the old house, but at the same time needed more space than the house could offer. In addition to its current use as a home for an elderly couple, they wanted additional spaces for family and friends. They proposed raising it by one level, a situation that would have completely changed the beauty of the old house. The architects' proposal was to bring the old house to its original form, to eliminate the volumes that had altered it and to use it for the couple. Then the extension would happen in a new body, raised on the footprint of the volume in the plot, on 3 levels: ground floor, first floor and terrace. The last floor of the new volume is occupied by a terrace from where the sea would be visible above the roof of the old house, like a Venetian campanile. If it were to be executed, the exterior of both volumes would be made of lime-based plaster, which would catch the seasonal changes in color, the wooden pillars on the first floor would be left visible.
