FAN are objects for retail spaces created by Oana Iacob for World Space Creators Awards Japan, in 2010. The entry won second prize in Professional Visual Design Category.
The space is ordered by the display objects called fan. Beyond the function that it has, the fan is beauty with the simple design. Putting together such object makes the impression of an artificial forest, emphasized by the mirror ceiling.
A fan is used to induce an air flow in order to cool or refresh oneself. The magic with it is that it produces a surface out of a linear object. It can be folded or made of different pieces that are connected with a pivot.
The fan uses the principle of a fan in a 3 dimensional shapes. In this case, a vertical wall becomes a surface. FAN is made of a vertical pillar, the pivot, where multiple slats are connected. When closed, the slats stand on top of each other living the space around free. When opened, the slats turn into stands where the object can be displayed. There should be stoppers connected to the pivot that keep the shape of the opened slats look aligned. The same object can be structure and furniture. It can space the object that are presented and also the technical needs of the shop.
In order to emphasize the shape of the fan, the ceiling of the space is plated with mirror. Like this, the impression is that the objects continue outside the space.
The ceiling fans – this time real – make the objects seam moving as well. The air flow is like the one of a real fan.
The space itself has simple finishing, with paint for floor and wall. Being a rounded object, the fan makes possible for the space to be observed from all the angles.
The impression of the space is one of beauty and order. The closed fan gives space, while the opened fan displays generously the objects.
The brief encounter that the visitor has with the object is made inside the space of the shop. The visitor is enchanted by the shape of the fan and is welcomed to come in.
